EXERCISE1: value of user experience

Introduction

In this project, I explored how User Experience (UX) Design can be applied to different fields of study, as well as the skills and trends that are in demand in various industries. I worked with my team with similar career goals to research on how user experience design applies to our future job roles by doing job searches, desk reviews, and reflection.

My goal was to understand how UX skills are connected to future jobs in varying fields, identify skills that industries are searching for, and figure out what UX trends are present in various industries pertaining to my field of study.

What I did

What I did

To pursue answers to my goals, I searched for jobs in my field and compiled a list of required skills. Due to my passion for XR and design engineering, I chose the Product Designer XR job at Unity. Most of the skills that I recognize are technical UX and CS skills that are mainly 3D. After I brought the posting to the team and discussed our search activities, we categorized the skills into two columns: hard skills and soft skills.

This activity taught me that there are many skills that companies are looking for, and that it's important to start improving them now. Some skills that frequently occurred in my sorting were communication and listening skills, prototyping, and using digital tools. This information opened my eyes to the fact that I can begin honing these skills right now by working on communicating as a team and learning to prototype and sketch properly in my classes.

I also conducted secondary research to identify UX trends in different industries. One trend that has emerged due to the Covid-19 pandemic is the shift towards online usability testing, which allows researchers to conduct tests without being present in person. Another trend is the use of mixed method research, which combines qualitative and quantitative data to provide deeper insights into user behavior and preferences. Designing with accessibility in mind is also becoming more prevalent, as companies aim to make their products more inclusive for users with disabilities. Interactive designs that are easy to navigate and personalized experiences are also becoming popular, as they help to improve user satisfaction and engagement.

Reflection and Contribution

Overall, this project has shown me the importance of UX design and its application in various fields of study. It has also helped me identify the skills that I need to develop in order to succeed in my future career. I am excited to continue learning and applying UX design principles in my coursework and future projects.
From this project, I gained background knowledge about what UX really is. Since it is my major, I learned how broad this major truly is and it helped me to understand what areas of UX I should focus on to achieve my ideal career. In this exercise, we mainly did our own work independently and meshed it in the presentation and documentation. I learned much about teamwork and communication in this first exercise which helped me set a guideline of what to expect in this course.
